Dr. Dennis Sourvanos
Periodontist – York and Hanover
Dr. Dennis Sourvanos serves patients in York and Hanover, Pennsylvania, as a periodontist at Pennsylvania Perio and Implants. His approach delivers a calm visit, a clear plan, and careful, evidence-based treatment tailored to each patient’s goals.
Born and raised on the West Coast, Dr. Sourvanos cultivated his passion for patient care at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene (BsDH), and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations. Training at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC laid the foundation for advanced study in periodontology and medically informed care.
Dr. Sourvanos’s training continued as he completed a comprehensive five-and-a-half-year residency program in Periodontics, and a Doctor of Science in Dentistry (DScD) at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia. He also received a Certificate in Translational Research, with an emphasis in Regulatory Science, from the Perelman School of Medicine. Notably, Dr. Sourvanos was a dually awarded National Institute of Health (NIH) Trainee with Postdoctoral Fellowships at the Center for Innovation & Precision Dentistry (CiPD) and the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT).
During visits to Pennsylvania Perio & Implants, patients and referrals can expect a collaborative approach involving both our internal dental team and external partners. This multidisciplinary approach enables us to provide comprehensive periodontal and peri-implant care, which includes a range of services such as implant therapy, ridge preservation and augmentation (including sinus augmentation), periodontal regeneration, soft-tissue grafting for recession and esthetics, treatment of peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis, and minimally invasive surgical and non-surgical therapies.
Our treatment planning approach emphasizes comprehensive care through the integration of advanced salivary diagnostics, cone-beam CT (CBCT), 3D imaging, computer-guided implant planning and surgery, and custom surgical guides to support accurate and predictable care. When appropriate, Dr. Sourvanos incorporates recombinant biologics and leverages red and near-infrared photobiomodulation (light therapy) to encourage healing and support implant osseointegration.
Dr. Sourvanos has a lifelong commitment to the translational sciences, where his ongoing research unifies collaborators across periodontics, radiation oncology, and medical physics to refine light-based treatments for patients in real-world settings. Recognitions include the American Dental Association (ADA) Foundation Crest & Oral-B Promising Researcher Award (2023) and the American Association of Dental Oral and Craniofacial Research (ADOCR) William B. Clark Fellowship in Clinical Periodontal Research (2021). He continues to lecture and present internationally on his work, as it relates to craniofacial light-tissue interactions, wound healing, and patient care outcomes.
In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Sourvanos’ service includes positions as a Non-Physician Scientist Institutional Review Board (IRB) Voting Member with the UPENN Human Research Protections Program and as Associate Editor for Dentistry Review (Elsevier). He also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Periodontics and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Radiation Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania, roles that keep his patient-based protocols aligned with the latest research and advanced techniques.
Outside of the clinic, Dr. Sourvanos enjoys working out, traveling, photography, and spending quality time with his family and friends- a balanced approach that mirrors the calm, thoughtful care patients experience in his clinical practice.
“My gold standard is guiding you toward optimal gum and implant health—so you can maintain function, enjoy the foods you love, and feel great about your smile.”
